Mattaponi Wildlife Management Area

The Mattaponi Wildlife Management Area extends across 2,542 acres of wetlands and forests at the meeting point of Mattaponi and South rivers.

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries acquired this land in 2010 for 7.6 million dollars through partnerships with conservation organizations.

The management area maintains recreational traditions through designated spaces for hunting deer, bears, turkeys, and waterfowl throughout different seasons.

Visitors need to obtain permits for activities such as hiking, fishing, birding, and primitive camping at the designated locations within the management area.

The property contains two rare oxbow lakes in bottomlands, marking former paths of the Mattaponi River and supporting diverse aquatic ecosystems.
