Aurora, Light sculpture at Ferry Terminal Plaza, San Francisco, United States.
Aurora is a light sculpture at Ferry Terminal Plaza consisting of 37 tall metal poles fitted with LED lights. The installation stretches along the waterfront near the Embarcadero Ferry Building and creates a striking visual element in this public area.
The sculpture was installed in 2011 through a collaboration between the San Francisco Arts Commission and the Port of San Francisco. The project aimed to enhance public waterfront spaces through contemporary art installations.
The light poles generate dynamic patterns reflecting maritime activity, transforming the waterfront into an open-air gallery space for evening visitors.
The installation is located at the intersection of Mission Street and Embarcadero and illuminates daily from sunset until midnight. You can view the lights from multiple angles, and evening hours offer the best viewing experience when the lights reach their full effect.
The LED system responds to environmental data including wind speed and tidal movements from San Francisco Bay, creating constantly changing light sequences. This responsiveness to natural conditions means each visit reveals a different display.
