The Bonfils Memorial Theatre features cream-colored brick walls, buff terra cotta details, and red sandstone accents with a contoured aluminum entrance canopy.
Helen Bonfils established this 550-seat theatre in 1953 to honor her parents, Frederick and Belle Bonfils, marking Denver's first major performance venue in decades.
From 1953 to 1986, the theatre presented over 400 productions, including plays, operas, concerts, films, and television shows with performers like Kevin Kline.
The building now operates as a Tattered Cover bookstore following extensive renovations in 2006 that preserved many original architectural elements.
The travertine lobby retains its original design with Prussian blue carpeting, wood-paneled walls, and pumpkin-colored plaster finishes from the 1950s.
