Vietnam Veterans Memorial, War memorial at Chicago Riverwalk, United States.
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a war memorial in Chicago dedicated on November 11, 2005. It features a rectangular fountain basin and a stone wall inscribed with the names of those who died during the Vietnam War. The featured sculpture was created by Gary Tillery, himself a Vietnam veteran.
An original memorial was established in 1982 to honor those who died in the conflict. The current version was dedicated in 2005 and incorporated stones from the earlier structure into its plaza design.
The memorial's inscribed stones were carried over from the earlier Vietnam Memorial on Wacker Drive, dedicated on November 11, 1982, so the names on the plaza predate the 2005 site. The Smithsonian Institution surveyed the monument through its "Save Outdoor Sculpture!" program and recorded that it honors veterans of all branches of the armed services who served in Vietnam.
The memorial stands at the Chicago Riverwalk, near the coordinates 41.88707, -87.62716, and is open to passers-by. Visitors can walk up to the rectangular fountain basin and read the inscribed names on the stone wall at close range. The plaza also holds the inscribed stones carried over from the earlier Wacker Drive memorial.
The memorial replaced an earlier Vietnam Memorial on Wacker Drive dedicated on November 11, 1982, and the inscribed stones from that structure were incorporated into the plaza of the 2005 memorial. The Smithsonian Institution surveyed the monument through its "Save Outdoor Sculpture!" program.
