Carswell Grove Baptist Church and Cemetery, church building in Perkins, United States of America
Carswell Grove Baptist Church and Cemetery is a listed church building with an adjoining burial ground in Jenkins County, Georgia. The structure displays Gothic Revival design with pointed arches and tall windows, while the cemetery contains numerous graves with inscriptions marking the area's early residents.
The church was established in 1867 by Black members and completed in 1870 after they left a segregated white congregation nearby. A fire destroyed the original building in 1919, prompting the community to rebuild the current Gothic Revival structure on the same site.
The church was founded as a space where Black worshippers could gather on their own terms after being segregated in white churches before the war. The cemetery holds graves of those who built and sustained this community for generations.
The site is open for visitors to walk around the building and cemetery grounds at their own pace. Daytime visits work best for seeing the architectural details and reading the grave inscriptions clearly.
The community rebuilt the church almost immediately after a devastating fire destroyed it in 1919, demonstrating their determination to maintain their place of worship despite extreme hardship. This spirit of resilience remains embedded in the building that stands today.
