Upper Butte Creek Falls, waterfall in Butte Creek
Upper Butte Creek Falls is a waterfall in Oregon that drops about 26 feet over a dark basalt ledge, forming a small cavern behind the water. The water flows across about 40 feet wide, creating a steady sheet that falls into a large pool below.
The waterfall kept its name from the natural creek feature it belongs to and has been known as Upper Butte Creek Falls throughout its history. The surrounding area was protected by the Oregon State Department of Forestry after previously being part of large clear-cut forestry areas, showing how land management shifted to preserve important natural sites.
Access is from Scotts Mills via quiet country roads with signs pointing to the trailhead parking lot. The well-maintained trail is easy to follow and suitable for most visitors, including children and leashed pets, with good conditions year-round, though checking conditions after winter or heavy rain is recommended before visiting.
Visitors can walk behind the falling water into the small cavern and view the cascade from inside. On calm days, paddlers have even navigated through the falls, making this a rare waterfall experience.
