Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve

Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve is a protected area in Northwest Alabama featuring forests, flowing creeks, and waterfalls connected by marked trails. Rock formations and canyon walls frame the landscape as you move through the different sections of the property.

The land was first purchased in 1979 and gradually expanded by its owners over several decades. It was donated to a land conservation organization in 2023 to ensure permanent protection of the area.

The preserve reflects the role of natural canyons in shaping local settlement patterns and daily life in the region. Visitors find themselves walking through a landscape that shaped how people lived and moved through the area.

The preserve is open Friday through Sunday from 7 AM to 5 PM, with registration required at the visitor support station near the parking area. Plan to arrive early if you want plenty of time on the trails and remember to check the schedule before your visit.

The canyon's elevation change creates distinct microclimates that support different plant communities across short distances. This natural variation means visitors encounter surprising diversity in forest types and vegetation as they move along the trails.
