Penang International Airport, International aerodrome in Bayan Lepas, Malaysia.
Penang International Airport is an international airport in Bayan Lepas, Malaysia, handling both passenger flights and cargo services. The site includes a runway measuring 3,353 meters (11,000 feet) in length, suited for large aircraft, and facilities for domestic and international connections.
British colonial authorities established a military airstrip here in the 1930s to secure Penang's strategic position. After World War II, the site was opened for civil aviation and expanded over the following decades into a key regional hub.
The name Bayan Lepas translates from Malay as "vast flatland," a reference to the low-lying coastal landscape that surrounds the facility. Today, travelers passing through the airport encounter signs, announcements, and service staff reflecting the multilingual reality of Penang, where Malay, English, Mandarin, and Tamil are all spoken.
Arrivals and departures are clearly marked within the main terminal, while security screenings generally move quickly. Currency exchange counters, ATMs, and mobile SIM card vendors are located in the public area beyond immigration.
Every evening, flocks of swallows settle between the terminals, roosting overhead until dawn before flying off again. Despite the constant aircraft movements, the birds have made this their regular resting site for years.
