Sri Mahamariamman Temple

Sri Mahamariamman Temple is a Hindu temple in Kuala Lumpur featuring a striking five-tiered tower whose walls are covered with carved figures from Hindu mythology. The structure displays traditional South Indian architecture with elaborate decorative elements and colorful carvings.

The temple began in 1873 as a private shrine and later became a public house of worship. This transformation during the 1920s established it as the religious center for the growing Hindu community.

The temple serves as the main gathering place for Hindu prayers in Kuala Lumpur, where devotees arrive daily with flowers and incense. Visitors can observe religious practices firsthand and feel the living spirituality of the community.

The temple is located on Jalan Tun H.S. Lee Road and asks visitors to dress respectfully. Wearing long sleeves and removing shoes before entering the inner areas helps you blend in and show proper respect.

During Thaipusam Festival, a 350-kilogram silver chariot is pulled through the streets to carry sacred statues. This vehicle was introduced in 1983 and creates a memorable sight during the celebrations.
