Taiping War Cemetery, Commonwealth war memorial in Taiping, Malaysia.
Taiping War Cemetery is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery in Taiping that honors soldiers who died during World War II and the Malayan Emergency. The site holds over 850 white granite headstones with detailed information about each soldier's rank and service record.
Major J.H. Ingram established the cemetery in 1946 to consolidate the remains of British and Commonwealth soldiers from various battle sites across the region. This consolidation arose from the need to gather scattered graves in one respectful location.
The cemetery is divided into sections that honor different faiths, with separate areas for Christian and non-Christian graves and Muslim burials facing Mecca. This layout shows how the site respects the diversity of those laid to rest here.
The cemetery is open daily to visitors and located near Bukit Larut with parking available on site. Access is straightforward, and visitors are advised to allow time to read the gravestones and study the inscriptions.
Among the graves rests Squadron Leader Arthur Stewart King Scarf, who received the Victoria Cross posthumously and was one of the first RAF casualties in Malaya. This burial honors a remarkable war hero whose name is less widely known today.
