KOMTAR

KOMTAR is a cylindrical tower in George Town with 65 floors rising about 249 meters into the skyline. The building combines government offices, retail stores, and dining venues all within one large complex.

The tower opened in 1988 following construction that began in 1986, marking a phase of rapid urban growth in the region. This period brought major changes to Penang's cityscape and development patterns.

You can visit the observation deck higher up with glass floor sections that let you look straight down to the city below. Shopping and dining options are spread across multiple floors, making it easy to spend several hours here comfortably.

The building houses the Penang State Gallery and a Durian Gallery, spaces that showcase local heritage and culture. These galleries are often overlooked by visitors, even though they offer interesting insights into the region.
