Sia Boey Urban Archaeological Park, Urban archaeological park in George Town, Malaysia
Sia Boey Urban Archaeological Park is a public green space in George Town built along the restored Prangin Canal, combining the preserved former market building with landscaped grounds. The site features mature trees, open grass areas, and a contemporary children's playground set within its grounds.
The park opened in 2019 and preserves the former Sia Boey Market Building and the Prangin Canal, which had served as a vital trading center since the 1880s. Both elements document the site's long importance as a commercial hub for the city.
The name Sia Boey means 'Town's End' in Hokkien, marking where Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Acehnese communities gathered and traded with one another. Visitors can sense this multicultural history while walking through the space today.
The park is located on Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong and opens daily from 6 AM to 11 PM without admission fees. The area can get busy during morning and evening hours, so visiting during midday offers a quieter experience among the green spaces.
The Prangin Canal features a granite lock structure supported by local wooden logs discovered during archaeological excavations in 2015. This unusual engineering shows the practical solutions early traders developed to manage water flow through the canal.
