Penang Peranakan Mansion, Heritage mansion in George Town, Malaysia
The Penang Peranakan Mansion is a 19th century house in George Town that displays Chinese-Malay design and craftsmanship throughout its rooms. Carved wooden doors, gilded walls, and mother-of-pearl inlaid furniture fill the grand spaces, showing the style and skill of that era.
The house was built in the late 1800s and belonged to Chung Keng Quee, a merchant and community leader of the Chinese population. His residence shows how Chinese and Malay cultures blended together during that period.
The mansion displays traditional wedding attire, household objects, and everyday scenes that show how the Chinese-Malay Peranakan community lived and celebrated. Visitors can see these customs reflected in the furnishings and room arrangements throughout the house.
The house is located in the town center and can be explored through guided tours offered in multiple languages. Photography is permitted in certain areas, so visitors should wear comfortable shoes to move through the rooms and check opening hours before arriving.
The house is part of a three-venue complex, connected to an ancestral temple and the Straits Chinese Jewellery Museum next to it. This arrangement allows visitors to see different aspects of Peranakan heritage within walking distance.
