Lebuh Aceh Mosque, 19th-century mosque in George Town, Malaysia
Lebuh Aceh Mosque is a 19th-century place of worship in George Town featuring a traditional Arab-style minaret topped with an Acehnese roof design. The building combines Arab elements with Malay architectural traditions and displays intricate carvings throughout its structure.
The mosque was founded in 1808 on land donated by Tengku Syed Hussain Al-Aidid. It became a center for Islamic learning and commerce in early Penang and played a significant role in the community's development.
The mosque serves as a gathering place for the local Muslim community and displays traditional Islamic burial customs in its courtyard with simple gravestones. The site is regularly visited by worshippers who maintain religious practices that have endured for generations.
The site is easy to reach by public bus, with stops near Pitt Street from which you can walk through Cannon Street. Visitors should dress respectfully and be aware that certain areas may be reserved during prayer times.
The area around the mosque earned the name Second Jeddah because it served as a gathering place for pilgrims preparing for their journey to Mecca. This historic nickname still reflects the location's special role in pilgrimage networks.
