Khoo Kongsi, Chinese clan temple in George Town, Malaysia.
Khoo Kongsi is a Chinese clan temple in the center of George Town, on Penang Island in Malaysia, known for its richly decorated facade. Ceramic mosaics showing dragons, phoenixes and scenes of deities cover the roof and outer walls, while gilded carvings frame the entrance gate.
After a fire in 1901, the building was reconstructed between 1902 and 1906, with craftsmen brought from China to create the decorations. The second version shows deliberately less ornate details, because people believed the first fire was caused by too much splendor.
The name means Khoo clan assembly hall, reminding visitors of the Chinese family association that still maintains this place. On festival days, incense burns and traditional music sometimes drifts from the courtyard.
Visiting is possible every day and usually takes around half an hour, allowing time to walk through the courtyard and main hall. Photography is allowed, but speaking quietly is advised because people sometimes come here to pray.
Beneath the courtyard floor lies a series of burial chambers where members of the Khoo family rest. This arrangement combines ancestor worship with everyday community life on the same grounds.
