Batik Painting Museum Penang, Batik art museum in George Town, Malaysia.
The Batik Painting Museum is housed in a three-story Straits-Eclectic building and displays works across multiple galleries spread throughout the floors. The collection features paintings by local artists who have translated the wax-resist dyeing technique onto canvas.
The building was purchased in 2010 and underwent extensive renovations before opening as Malaysia's first batik painting museum in 2013. The structure itself dates from the Straits Settlement period and was carefully preserved as it took on its new purpose.
The museum showcases how batik painting emerged as a distinct Malaysian art form, blending traditional textile techniques with modern canvas work that visitors can observe in each gallery. The works on display reflect how local artists adapted this ancient craft into a recognized fine art medium.
The museum is open daily and located in the old town in a building easily accessed from nearby streets. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes to explore the various galleries and expect stairs connecting the three floors.
The museum holds the largest collection of works by Chuah Thean Teng, the artist who founded this art form in modern times. His paintings form the backbone of the exhibition and show how the technique developed from its origins to today.
