Church of the Holy Immaculate Conception

The Church of the Holy Immaculate Conception is a white building with traditional Catholic architectural features located in the center of Johor Bahru. The interior is simple and calm, designed to provide a quiet space for prayer and reflection.

The building was constructed in 1883 and was originally named Our Lady of Lourdes, but underwent reconstruction in 1927 under the direction of Father C. Saleilles. This renovation shaped the appearance of the church that remains visible today.

The church holds services in four languages: English, Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin, and Tamil, reflecting the diverse makeup of its congregation. Visitors notice immediately how people from different backgrounds come together and share this space.

Sultan Abu Bakar donated the land for construction, while Sultan Ibrahim later had a large statue of the Virgin Mary placed in front of the building. These two gestures show the long historical connection between the ruling families and this religious community.
