Pamir Mountains, Mountain range in Murghob District, Tajikistan
The Pamir Mountains are a high mountain system in Murghob District, Tajikistan, extending across large parts of Central Asia with several summits above 7,000 meters. The landscape combines wide valleys with steep ridges, ice fields and barren plateaus crossed by few roads.
Caravans used the passes for centuries to move goods between East and West. European explorers mapped the summits in the 19th century and gave many of them their current names.
Local groups move with their herds to high pastures during summer and return to protected valleys when winter arrives. Some villages sit above 4,000 meters and show how people adapt to life in thin air.
Access requires a special permit that should be requested in advance. The best time to visit is between July and September when high roads are open and weather becomes more stable.
The Fedchenko ice sheet extends over 77 kilometers and is the longest glacier outside polar regions. Parts of it feed rivers that flow all the way to the Aral Sea.
