Mediterranean Sea, Sea basin between Europe, Africa and Asia.
The Mediterranean is a sea basin separating Europe, Africa and Asia, stretching from the Atlantic to the Levantine coast. Numerous islands rise from its waters, including Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica, Crete and Cyprus, while its shoreline alternates between rocky cliffs and flat sandy beaches.
The earliest civilizations around this sea formed over five millennia ago along its shores, from Egypt to Mesopotamia. Later, Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Ottoman empires successively controlled its trade routes and ports, shaping the history of three continents.
Coastal towns hold fishermen's festivals and harbor markets where locals buy fresh catch directly from boats at dawn. Fishers mend their nets by the quays, and in the evening families gather along promenades to watch the sun set over the water.
The water stays relatively warm throughout the year, suitable for swimming between May and October. Winds such as the mistral or bora can rise suddenly, especially in autumn and spring, creating choppy conditions or stronger currents.
In some regions the water flows through narrow straits like Messina or the Dardanelles, where strong tides push the sea in opposite directions. Also, occasional whirlpools form at certain bottlenecks, known to sailors since antiquity and marked in their navigation charts.
