Illyria was a region inhabited by numerous tribes of people known collectively as the Illyrians.
Illyria existed from the 4th century BC up until the Roman conquest in the 2nd century AD.
The Illyrians shared a common culture and language, but were politically divided into many tribal states.
Illyrian lands today are part of several modern countries - Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia.
Illyria has inspired works of art and literature, including several of Shakespeare's plays.
