St. Mary of Blachernae Church, Berat, Byzantine church in Berat Castle, Albania

St. Mary of Blachernae Church is a rectangular structure with a narthex and walls built from regional rock within the fortified castle grounds of Berat. The building fits compactly into the tight street layout of the castle area and sits at an elevation of about 650 feet (200 meters).

The church was founded in 1201, marking a period of active religious development in medieval Albania. Its establishment occurred during a time when the mountain region was deeply influenced by Byzantine spiritual traditions.

The interior walls display frescoes and religious artworks from the 16th century, created by Nicholas Onufri as a continuation of his father's artistic legacy. These works shape the visual character of the space and show how religious art was valued in this mountain settlement.

The church sits within the fortified castle grounds, so visitors should expect steep paths and narrow passageways. Comfortable shoes are useful for exploring both the church and surrounding castle area, and it is helpful to allow time for walking through tight streets.

The church takes its name from the original Church of St. Mary of Blachernae in Constantinople, creating a direct link between Albanian and Byzantine religious worlds. This choice of name shows how communities here expressed their identity by honoring distant spiritual centers.
