Bashtovë Fortress

Bashtovë Fortress is a medieval fortification in central Albania featuring a rectangular layout with towers positioned at its corners. The structure has three entrance points along its northern, western, and eastern walls, with towers rising to approximately 12 meters.

The fortress was built during the Venetian period, though it may rest upon earlier Byzantine foundations from the 6th century. It grew into a strategic outpost along ancient trade routes where military and commercial interests intersected.

The fortress served as a key checkpoint along regional trade routes, and its location shows how commerce shaped its design. Visitors can understand how the walls command views over the river valley, reflecting the importance of controlling goods moving through the area.

The site is accessible on foot from the village of Vilë-Ballaj, which connects to the wider road network in the region. Wear sturdy footwear as the terrain around the ruins is uneven.

The walls enclose an interior space and rise to about 9 meters, giving the fortress a commanding presence in the landscape. These proportions reveal how carefully the structure was designed to serve both defensive and control functions.
