Karavasta Lagoon, Mediterranean lagoon in Divjake-Karavasta National Park, Albania
Karavasta Lagoon is a coastal wetland situated along Albania's Adriatic shore, marked by shallow waters, reed beds, and scattered pine forests. The terrain consists of interconnected basins and islands that create a mosaic of water and vegetation throughout the protected area.
The lagoon was first recorded in written sources around 1297, functioning as a harbor for regional maritime activity. Over time, the location maintained importance as a natural anchorage point along the coast.
Local inhabitants maintain traditional fishing practices in the lagoon while offering guided tours and operating small restaurants that serve regional specialties.
A wooden observation tower offers elevated views across the water and surrounding wetlands for better sightseeing. The period from spring through early summer provides the best conditions for observing migrating and resident birds.
The site hosts one of Europe's largest populations of a specific diving bird and serves as the country's only breeding location for this species. This bird abundance draws observers from across the region who come specifically to study these birds.
