The stone fortress stands on a hilltop at 214 meters elevation, featuring thick defensive walls that stretch along the Osum River bank.
Romans first captured the fortress in 200 BC, followed by substantial reinforcements during the Byzantine Empire under Emperor Theodosius II in the 5th century.
The fortress complex contains twenty Christian churches constructed in the 13th century and the Onufri National Museum displaying regional religious artifacts.
Access to the fortress requires a 200-meter walk up a steep cobblestone path from downtown Berat, with guided tours typically lasting two hours.
The castle maintains a living community within its walls, with residents occupying traditional stone houses alongside historical monuments and churches.
