Vjosa-Narta Protected Landscape

The Vjosa-Narta Protected Landscape is a natural area on the Adriatic coast with wetlands, farmland, forests, and coastal zones. The protected area extends from sea level to approximately 246 meters (807 feet) in elevation and encompasses roughly 19,738 hectares of varied habitats.

The area became officially protected in 2004 when Albania's Council of Ministers created it as a designated conservation zone. This decision marked a turning point in efforts to safeguard the natural systems and resources of the region.

Local communities have practiced fishing in the Narta Lagoon for generations and remain deeply connected to the water. Today, residents participate actively in conservation efforts to protect the wetlands and the wildlife they depend on.

The protected area is easily accessible from the nearby city of Vlorë. Wear sturdy footwear if you plan to explore the wetlands, as the ground can be uneven and soft in places.

The Narta Lagoon holds nearly half of Albania's Mallard population and a significant share of the country's Eurasian Coot numbers. This makes it a key resting and breeding area for waterfowl on an international scale.
