Sanahin Monastery, Medieval monastery in Alaverdi, Armenia
The monastery stands on a plateau above the Debed River, featuring two main churches, a library building, and a bell tower with carved stone details.
In 966, Queen Khosrovanush commissioned the construction of the Sanahin Monastery, which became the episcopal center of the Kyurikian Kingdom in 979.
The Sanahin educational complex served as a prominent center of medieval Armenian learning, producing manuscripts and training scholars in philosophy and calligraphy.
The monastery complex includes four churches, two with gavits (entrance halls), a bell tower, and a library, all accessible through marked pathways.
The monastery houses the tombs of the Zakarian and Kyurikian noble families, with almost 190 stone inscriptions dating from the 10th to 19th centuries.
