Sanahin Bridge

Sanahin Bridge, Medieval bridge in Alaverdi, Armenia.

Description

The Sanahin Bridge is a medieval structure that crosses the Debed River with a single arch of polished basalt stones. The construction spans approximately 19 meters and measures about 3 meters wide, connecting two sections of Alaverdi separated by a canyon.

History

A queen named Vaneni commissioned this bridge in the 12th century to transport her deceased husband's body to family burial grounds. The structure became an important crossing for the local population and has served the community for many centuries.

Culture

Four stone lions guard the corners of the parapet, symbols of protection rooted in medieval Armenian building customs. These guardian figures reflect beliefs about safety and spiritual guardianship that shaped medieval construction practices.

Practical

The bridge connects two sections of town across a deep canyon, with the left bank positioned much lower than the right bank. Visitors should be aware that ground levels differ significantly at both approaches, so caution is advisable when entering.

Did you know?

Alexander Tamanyan, architect of Yerevan's first general plan, oversaw reinforcement of the bridge's left foundation between 1928 and 1929. His intervention allowed the aging structure to regain stability and continue serving its purpose.
