Sevan Botanical Garden, Botanical garden in Sevan, Armenia.
Sevan Botanical Garden is a 5-hectare site holding more than 650 plant species, including over 200 tree varieties from North America, Asia, Europe, and the Mediterranean region. The plants grow at about 2000 meters elevation, where the mountain climate is both cold and windy.
The Armenian Academy of Sciences established this garden in 1944 as an extension of Yerevan's botanical garden. A greenhouse was added in 2015, expanding the ability to protect delicate plant species throughout the year.
Locals and visitors use the space to explore rare plants from different continents and learn about regional plant diversity. The grounds demonstrate how gardeners adapt plants to harsh mountain conditions, which often surprises guests.
The garden sits near Azatutyan Street and remains open throughout the year, though winter can be harsh at this elevation. Visitors should prepare for changing weather conditions and bring appropriate clothing.
The greenhouse is a notable addition showing how gardeners protect plants in a mountain climate that is usually too harsh for many species. This allows them to grow tropical and tender plants that otherwise could not survive.
