Cunene Province, Administrative province in southern Angola
Cunene Province extends over 87,342 square kilometers of savannahs and plateaus, with the Cunene River forming a natural boundary with Namibia.
The province experienced territorial conflicts during World War I between 1914 and 1915, leading to a temporary German occupation of the region.
The Ovambo people maintain traditional pastoralist practices across the province, moving their cattle through established seasonal grazing routes.
The province contains six municipalities including Cahama, Kuroka, Kuvelai, Kwanhama, Namakunde, and Ombadja, with Ondjiva functioning as the administrative center.
The province records 782,931 rural inhabitants compared to 207,156 urban residents, making it one of the most rurally concentrated regions in Angola.
