Drachenhauchloch

Drachenhauchloch, Underground cave system near Grootfontein, Namibia.

Description

Drachenhauchloch is a cave system in the Otjozondjupa Region near Grootfontein, Namibia, that opens through a narrow entrance and descends to a depth of about 200 feet (66 meters). The main chamber sits at the lowest level, where a large underground body of water is surrounded almost entirely by rock formations.

History

Explorers from South Africa found the opening to the underground chamber in 1986 while searching for possible cave formations on a farm in the Otavibergen. Exploration of the subterranean lake began a few months later after divers confirmed the depth and size of the body of water.

Culture

Locals sometimes refer to the site simply as the lake cave, focusing on what lies beneath rather than the German colonial name. Visitors often gather at the entrance to feel the moist warm air rising from below, especially during cooler morning hours.

Practical

Only trained cave divers with special permits can reach the interior of the cave, as the descent requires technical equipment and experience in cave diving. Access to the site is through private farmland, so prior arrangement with the landowners is necessary.

Did you know?

A species of golden catfish lives in the underground lake and has adapted to total darkness by feeding on organic material that drifts down to the water surface. These fish have evolved without functional eyes and navigate using touch and vibration sensors along their bodies.
