Drachenhauchloch, Underground cave system near Grootfontein, Namibia.

The Drachenhauchloch cave network extends 66 meters below ground level and contains the largest non-glacial subterranean lake in the world.

South African speleologists discovered the cave system in 1986 on Harasib farm, during an expedition in the Otavibergen mountains region.

The German name Drachenhauchloch, meaning Dragon's Breath Cave, reflects Namibia's colonial period and refers to the humid air flowing from the entrance.

Access to the underground lake requires professional diving equipment and special permits due to the complex geological formation and safety considerations.

The cave houses a population of rare golden catfish that adapted to complete darkness and survive by consuming materials falling on the water surface.
