101 Battalion, Motorized infantry battalion in Namibia.
The 101 Battalion was a motorized infantry unit in Namibia equipped with Casspir and Kwêvoël vehicles. These vehicles carried 20mm cannons and Browning machine guns designed for rapid deployment operations.
The unit began in 1976 as 1 Owambo Battalion and was renamed to 35 Battalion in 1978 and then to 101 Battalion in 1980. These name changes reflected shifts in military strategy and organization during that period.
The battalion integrated black and white personnel from different ethnic groups in South West Africa, creating a mixed-race military force.
The unit conducted approximately 200 military operations per year between 1985 and 1989. Operations focused on external missions and pursuit of infiltrators.
Many soldiers in the unit were former SWAPO insurgents who later participated in operations against their original organization. These transitions revealed complex shifts within regional military history.
