Mahango Game Park

Mahango Game Park is a protected wildlife reserve that stretches along the Okavango River, combining floodplains, wetlands, and bush country in a single landscape. Ancient baobab trees dot the terrain and provide habitat for diverse animal and plant life.

The reserve was established in 1986 to protect natural ecosystems and animal migration routes in the region. In 2007 it became part of a larger national park system, marking a shift toward broader conservation efforts.

The park sits along a river corridor where traditional animal migration routes meet the edges of human settlement. This coexistence shows how the region balances wildlife needs with the presence of nearby communities.

The park is accessible via the C48 road and offers the best wildlife viewing in early morning or late afternoon hours. Visitors should plan adequate time and remain flexible, as animals appear on their own schedule.

The park harbors a remarkable diversity, including rare antelopes and African wild dogs that are difficult to find elsewhere in the region. These species benefit from riverside habitats and expansive areas with minimal human disturbance.
