Tobífera Formation, Geological formation in Santa Cruz Province, Argentina
Tobífera Formation is a geological unit in southern Patagonia composed of volcanic rocks, tuff beds, dark shale, sandstone, and conglomerate deposits. These varied rock types are found together across the landscape and reflect the complex geological processes that shaped this southern Argentine region.
The formation originated during the Middle and Late Jurassic when crustal stretching created the Rocas Verdes Basin. It developed alongside the Sarmiento Ophiolitic Complex during this same period of regional tectonism.
Scientists and researchers visit the formation to study the geological evolution of the Patagonian Andes and understand the tectonic movements of southern South America.
The rocks show signs of folding and deformation that require some geological knowledge to fully understand. Visiting with a guide familiar with local geology helps clarify what you are seeing in the exposed rock faces.
A significant portion of this formation extends beneath the sea floor into the offshore Malvinas Basin, hidden beneath the water. This submerged extension shows that the geological processes shaping Patagonia reached far beyond the visible land.
