Ranquil Formation, Geological formation in Biobío Region, Chile
The Ranquil Formation is a geological feature in the Biobío Region made up of layered sedimentary rocks. It displays sandstone, siltstone, and mudstone across a wide area, with the thickest sections found in the southwest.
This formation took shape millions of years ago during the Miocene and Pliocene periods when the region was covered by ocean. The sediments settled beneath seawater and rest on top of older rock layers from earlier times.
Scientists study the rock layers here to understand how ancient oceans shaped this land. The formation shows patterns left by creatures that once lived in these waters, telling stories of life long ago.
You can reach this formation by following various routes through the Biobío Region to see different sections. Plan your visit outside the rainy season for easier and safer exploration of the rock exposures.
The rock layers preserve evidence of a massive wave that struck this coastal area millions of years ago. This catastrophic event is linked to a cosmic impact that shook the region.
