Maipú is a commune in Santiago Province, Chile, covering flat and urban terrain in the southwestern part of the metropolitan region. The commune borders several other urban areas and forms an important part of the larger metropolitan landscape.
The Battle of Maipú on April 5, 1818, decided the Chilean War of Independence when republican forces defeated royalist troops. This victory secured Chile's final liberation from Spanish rule and marked a turning point in South American history.
