Fort Lambert, Military fortification in Coquimbo, Chile
Fort Lambert sits on Castillo del Carmen hill at the northern end of Coquimbo Bay, with stone towers and original cannons still in place from its construction. Multiple observation platforms look out over the bay and toward the islands beyond.
The fort was built in 1865 to defend the bay during conflicts with Spain and the later Pacific War. It was named after Carlos Lambert in 1879, when he led its restoration.
The fort represents a key military structure in Chilean coastal defense, named after Carlos Lambert who restored it in 1879.
The site is open most days with free access and paths connecting the towers and platforms. Sturdy shoes are recommended since the hilltop is uneven and often windy.
From here you can look toward Punta Pelicanos island, where large groups of pelicans gather regularly and create a natural spectacle. The bird colonies are especially active in good weather when the sea is calm.
