The church was built in the mid-19th century on land donated by Buenaventura Argandoña Subercaseaux. On 19 November 1857, Bishop Justo Donoso Vivanco of La Serena named it a parish. Its first priest, Pedro Antonio Vargas, served until 14 September 1858, when José Domingo Chocorro succeeded him and remained until his death in 1891.
