Our Lady of Mercy Cathedral, La Serena, Catholic cathedral at Plaza de Armas, La Serena, Chile.
Our Lady of Mercy Cathedral is a neoclassical structure located at the Plaza de Armas featuring symmetrical proportions and two towers flanking its central entrance. Built from local limestone with traditional construction methods, it stands as the prominent religious edifice in La Serena's downtown area.
The original parish church on this site dates to 1549, but was replaced in the 19th century by the current building. Construction began in 1844 under French architect Juan Herbage and was completed in 1856.
The cathedral serves as the spiritual center for the Catholic community in La Serena with daily religious services. People gather here not only to worship but also to experience a focal point of the city's public life.
The cathedral sits centrally at the Plaza de Armas and is easy to reach, accessible via Los Carrera and Cordovez streets. Visitors can enter daily to explore the interior spaces and architectural features at their own pace.
The present building incorporates materials and components from the original 1549 church it replaced. This reuse creates a physical link across centuries and shows how the city preserved its past within the new structure.
