The Museo de Historia Regional is a history museum in La Serena that displays regional holdings through artifacts, photographs, and written records. The exhibition traces the city's development from its beginnings to the present day.

The building dates from the late 19th century on land once owned by Francisco de Aguirre, founder of La Serena. Gabriel González Videla owned it from 1927 to 1973; the State of Chile bought it in 1977 and declared it a National Monument in 1981. The museum opened on 26 August 1984, during the city's 440th anniversary, through the efforts of Gonzalo Ampuero, director of the Museo Arqueológico de La Serena, who arranged for its history and art collections to move here. Earthquakes in 1997 and 2019 forced closures for reconstruction.

The museum shows how La Serena developed over time through objects and materials from different periods of the city's past. Visitors can observe how daily life, buildings, and society changed across generations.

The museum stands on the Plaza de Armas of La Serena, next to the Plaza Gabriel González Videla, where a statue of the former president stands and the city's book fair is occasionally held. The building has two floors at the front and one at the rear, with interior patios that bring in natural light. It closed for reconstruction after the 1997 and 2019 earthquakes.

The museum holds a specialized collection of documents about Gabriel Gonzalez Videla, a former Chilean president, which creates a bridge between local and national history. These archives show how regional figures influenced events at the national level.
