Mawk'allaqta, Arequipa

The archaeological complex contains more than two hundred stone buildings, tombs, and ceremonial platforms at 3,700 meters elevation in the Andes mountains.

The site belonged to Kuntisuyu, one of the four administrative regions of the Inca Empire, functioning as a primary religious and governmental center.

Mawk'allaqta obtained its name from Quechua language elements, with mawk'a indicating ancient and llaqta referring to a settlement or populated place.

Travelers reach the archaeological site through Pampacolca town, situated 170 kilometers northwest of Arequipa, requiring preparation for high altitude conditions.

The Center for Pre-Columbian Studies at the University of Warsaw initiated Project Condesuyos in 1996 to investigate this archaeological location.
