Yauyos Province, Administrative province in Lima Department, Peru

Yauyos Province is an administrative region in the Peruvian Andes divided into 33 districts, stretching across mountainous terrain that reaches elevations around 5,000 meters. The landscape features valleys, rivers, and peaks, with each district having its own settlement and local center.

This province was established as a Peruvian administrative division to organize Andean communities under one governance structure. The individual districts developed from older indigenous settlements founded centuries ago.

The Tupe area keeps alive the indigenous Jaqaru language, while communities elsewhere speak traditional Quechua in their daily routines. You can hear this linguistic diversity at local celebrations and markets where older and younger generations interact.

The province is connected to Lima via a road network, though smaller routes between districts may be unpaved in places. Accommodations are available in various villages, and it is best to plan ahead since services in remote areas can be limited.

The Nor Yauyos-Cochas Landscape Reserve contains many high-altitude lakes, including Pumaqucha, surrounded by Andean peaks and home to rare Andean wildlife. These lakes display brilliant blue water on clear days and reveal the water sources that sustain the entire region.
