Huaca Rajada, Moche archaeological pyramid in Lambayeque department, Peru
Huaca Rajada is an adobe pyramid in Lambayeque with multiple construction layers built one on top of another over time. The structure contains burial chambers and sacrificial remains from the Moche period.
Construction began during the early Moche period and was expanded and rebuilt multiple times in later centuries. One of its most significant discoveries occurred in the late 20th century.
The burial platforms show how the Moche people honored their rulers and what role religious ceremonies played in their daily life through the objects found within.
Plan to spend a few hours exploring the excavation areas and viewing the displayed artifacts. The site is easy to reach, but offers little shade, so bring sun protection.
Moche artisans used a special gilding method where they chemically coated copper alloys with gold to create objects that looked precious. This shows they had deep knowledge of metalworking techniques that were remarkable for the ancient world.
