Calipuy National Sanctuary

Calipuy National Sanctuary is a protected nature reserve in the Andes mountains, covering mountain terrain with plains and varied slopes. The site spans different elevations with diverse vegetation patterns and landscape features across northwestern Peru.

The site was established as a protected area in 1981, following shifts in how land was managed across Peru. This transformation turned the terrain into a guarded space for nature and wildlife.

Local communities practice traditional land management methods that have been passed down through generations and remain visible in how they care for the terrain. These approaches shape daily interactions with the environment and reflect long-standing relationships with the landscape.

Bring warm clothing since temperatures shift considerably at elevation and weather can be changeable throughout the day. It helps to prepare for mountain conditions and remain flexible as weather patterns may shift during your visit.

The reserve holds significant numbers of a rare high-altitude plant found in only a few places within the region. Alongside this, wild camelids inhabit the area in stable populations, making it a critical refuge for these species.
