Zamora Chinchipe

The province encompasses 10,559 square kilometers of mountainous terrain between the Andes range and Amazon basin, with elevations reaching 1,734 meters above sea level.

Spanish settlers founded Zamora de los Alcaides in 1549, but indigenous Shuar resistance forced them to abandon the settlement until permanent colonization in 1921.

The territory maintains strong connections to indigenous communities, with local artisans producing traditional items like shigras bags, seed necklaces, and ceremonial spears.

The provincial capital Zamora connects nine administrative cantons through a network of roads, enabling access to commercial centers and natural attractions.

Podocarpus National Park within the province contains over 100 lakes across varied elevations, supporting exceptional biodiversity and water resources.
