Bird Island extends 4.8 kilometers in length and 800 meters in width, with Roché Peak rising as its highest elevation point.

British explorer James Cook discovered the island in 1775, noting the substantial bird populations that influenced its current name.

The British Antarctic Survey maintains a research facility on Bird Island, where scientists study seabirds and seal populations throughout the year.

Access to Bird Island requires special authorization as it holds the designation of Site of Special Scientific Interest under environmental regulations.

The island supports 27 of South Georgia's 31 breeding bird species and houses approximately 65,000 Antarctic fur seals in its territory.
