Reserva natural del Pilar, Nature reserve at Rio Lujan floodplains, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina
Reserva natural del Pilar is a nature reserve along the Rio Lujan floodplain spanning 297 hectares across three separate areas. The landscape consists of lagoons, wetlands, and native plant species growing along the riverbank.
The reserve was established by local ordinance in 1991 and received extended legal protection through a decree in 2003. Its successive expansions reflect growing commitment to safeguarding this river landscape.
The place serves as a learning ground for the local community, where nature observation and environmental stewardship are part of everyday experience. Schools and families use the paths and water areas to discover and document the varied wildlife.
The reserve is accessible via Provincial Route 25 from Pilar city with seasonal operating hours. Winter hours run from 9:00 to 18:00, while summer hours extend until 19:30.
The site contains a native plant nursery that cultivates specimens for restoring original vegetation across the region. This work helps gradually return natural plants to areas where they have disappeared.
