Otamendi natural reserve, Nature reserve in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina.
Otamendi natural reserve is a wetland area in Buenos Aires Province where the Pampas plains transition into the Paraná River delta ecosystem. The land supports both freshwater and saline environments that create distinct habitats within the same space.
The land was once used by the military as an artillery practice ground before shifting to cattle farming under different management organizations. Protection came later to safeguard the natural environments from further degradation.
The Faculty of Agronomy of Buenos Aires operates botanical research programs on the grounds, making it a working center where scientists study native plant species. This ongoing research connects the reserve to academic institutions and conservation efforts across the region.
The El Talar trail provides a marked walking path of roughly one kilometer to reach an observation point. From there you can view the broader landscape and different sections of the reserve.
The reserve protects species at risk of disappearing, such as marsh deer, river otters, and scarlet-headed blackbirds. These animals depend on the wetland conditions found here for their survival.
