Recoleta Cultural Center, Art museum in Recoleta district, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The Recoleta Cultural Center is a cultural venue in Buenos Aires housed in a former Franciscan monastery, with over 27 exhibition halls spread across multiple levels. The spaces display contemporary art, sculptures, and multimedia installations, complemented by a music production laboratory and an amphitheater designed for various events and performances.
The building started as a Franciscan monastery in 1732 and was converted into a cultural center in 1980. This transformation kept the colonial architecture and original structural elements intact, giving the place its distinctive character.
The name Recoleta comes from the Franciscan community that has been present here for centuries, rooted in the Spanish colonial tradition. Today, visitors experience how contemporary art exhibitions and live performances unfold within the monastery's colonial rooms, drawing both local and international audiences.
The center opens Tuesday through Friday at 13:30 until 22:00, and on weekends starting at 11:15 until 22:00. All exhibitions and performances are free to enter, making it easy to drop by and explore at your own pace.
The center houses a specialized music production laboratory equipped with advanced technology available to artists for experimental projects. This facility makes it a place where sound art and technical innovation meet, setting it apart from typical exhibition spaces.
