Chinatown, Asian commercial district in Belgrano, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Chinatown is an Asian commercial district in Belgrano, Buenos Aires, running mainly along Arribeños and Mendoza streets. The entrance is marked by a three-level stone archway decorated with dragon and lion figures imported from China.
The settlement began in the 1980s with Taiwanese immigrants who established themselves in the Belgrano area. The following decade brought additional Asian communities from China, Korea, Japan and Laos who transformed the zone into a cultural hub.
The Chong Kuan Buddhist temple offers classes in meditation, calligraphy and martial arts today and serves as a spiritual center for the Asian community. Visitors can observe incense being lit and worshippers in traditional clothing performing their rituals.
Most shops and restaurants open in the morning and close in the evening, with weekends bringing more activity and larger crowds. You can explore the main streets on foot since everything is concentrated within a few blocks.
The stone archway at the entrance was shipped in pieces from China and assembled on site using traditional techniques. The tiles and decorative elements were crafted according to ancient architectural plans to preserve the authentic design.
