Palacio Taranco, French-style palace in Ciudad Vieja, Uruguay
Palacio Taranco is a three-story palace built in the French style and located in the old city quarter, featuring marble colonnades, oak flooring, and ornate architectural details throughout its interior. The rooms display art collections and period furnishings that reflect the lifestyle of its original owners.
French architects Charles Louis Girault and Jules Chifflot Leon designed this residence in 1907 for the wealthy Ortiz de Taranco brothers. The family home later transitioned into a public museum to share its art collection with the wider community.
The place now houses the National Museum of Decorative Arts, where visitors encounter European artworks and period furnishings displayed throughout its rooms. The collection tells the story of how wealthy families decorated their homes in earlier centuries.
The site sits at the corner of 25 de Mayo and 1° de Mayo in the historic quarter and is easily accessible on foot. Plan enough time to walk through the different rooms and view the collections at a leisurely pace.
The dining room features seven Aubusson tapestries created specifically for this space and elaborately framed in gold leaf. These costly textiles showcase the craftsmanship and luxury that the original owners could afford.
